Blame the soldiers
The popular story ties the term to World War I, when American and British soldiers supposedly came home from France impressed by how, let's say, enthusiastically the French approached kissing. The exact origin is debated, but "French kiss" was established English slang by the early 20th century and never left. Fun footnote: French itself reportedly didn't get a dedicated verb for it, "galocher," in a major dictionary until 2013.
On the purity test it's one of the most-checked items, usually among the first ten boxes anyone ticks. The follow-up question about doing it in public is where scores actually diverge. Kissing someone is a milestone; doing it in front of the quad is a personality.
